The General Secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), Viliame Takayawa, has reiterated the party’s dedication to holding the coalition government accountable by addressing issues that resonate with the public. As his term comes to a close, Takayawa stressed that SODELPA joined the coalition in the best interest of the Fijian populace, and this commitment is unwavering.

Despite expressing regret over recent tensions within the coalition, he affirmed that SODELPA will continue to raise necessary concerns. “The coalition should appreciate that we provide checks and balances for good governance, and we are committed to voicing the people’s needs instead of remaining silent,” Takayawa stated.

Echoing the sentiments of coalition colleagues, the General Secretary emphasized the importance of representing the people’s interests. “Our role as politicians involves gathering information from citizens about their issues and advocating on their behalf, even if it means challenging egos along the way—it is our duty,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sila Balawa, General Secretary of the People’s Alliance, acknowledged that SODELPA has received political leniency on several occasions. He assured that despite occasional differences, the People’s Alliance remains committed to a stable coalition partnership.

The three political parties in the coalition have collectively recognized that the welfare of the Fijian people should take precedence over individual party interests. They further agreed that their partnership relies on mutual respect rather than a legally binding agreement, allowing for a more flexible governance model.

This commitment to collaboration reflects an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s political trajectory, suggesting that through open dialogue and accountability, the coalition can foster stability and unity in governance. As Fiji approaches the next elections, the emphasis on teamwork amid differences holds promise for a more prosperous future for all citizens.
