Hockey is emerging as a strategic tool for fostering positive change in Fiji, particularly at a time when the country is facing escalating challenges related to illegal substance abuse among its youth. The ongoing Oceania Pacific Cup, taking place at the National Hockey Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva, is playing a crucial role in this initiative.

In addition to the competitive players, young people are actively participating in various capacities, including serving as officials and ball kids. Former Fiji hockey coach Hector Smith Snr emphasized the positive impact of this tournament, stating, “Every day you hear complaints about youths being involved in drugs, and this is a better option.” He noted that the tournament’s timing during the off-season for local hockey engages young individuals in meaningful and character-building activities, steering them away from negative influences.

“This is occupying the players, and at the same time, you have some youths helping the officials with the tournament, so it’s a plus for everybody,” Smith Snr remarked. He added that with the Pacific Games cycle in mind, the competition offers useful playtime for all teams involved, ultimately benefiting the development of young athletes.

This initiative not only provides a platform for competitive hockey but also encourages youth engagement in sports, contributing to community spirit and resilience against substance abuse. By harnessing the power of hockey, Fiji is charting a hopeful path toward a healthier, more active youth culture. Engaging young people in sports can be a vital strategy for addressing social issues and improving community well-being.
