HIV Cases Surge: Alarming Trend Among iTaukei Population

Eighty-nine percent of all HIV-positive tests recorded from January to June 2023 are linked to the iTaukei population. This concerning statistic was shared by Dr. Rachel Devi, the head of family health at the Ministry of Health, who noted a stark 547 percent increase in HIV cases over the past five years.

Dr. Devi emphasized that the high number of iTaukei individuals testing positive could be attributed to several factors. She questioned the reasons behind this trend, particularly the uncertainty surrounding the statistics. According to her, the increase may result from more extensive testing within the iTaukei community, while individuals of Indian descent may be undergoing fewer tests.

Dr. Devi stressed the importance of analyzing these figures within the context of Fiji’s diverse demographic landscape. She pointed out that heightened awareness and increased testing have led to more cases being identified, as individuals recognize risky behaviors or partners who were HIV positive.

She encouraged a broad awareness campaign, noting that HIV does not discriminate based on race, religion, or age. Dr. Devi highlighted that misconceptions surrounding HIV contribute to stigma and may deter individuals from seeking testing and treatment.

The Ministry of Health is dedicated to addressing these disparities through improved education and outreach programs.
