HIV Alarm: 89% Cases Among iTaukei Population Spark Concerns

Eighty-nine percent of all HIV-positive tests recorded between January and June of this year have been linked to the iTaukei population, according to Dr. Rachel Devi, head of family health at the Ministry of Health. This troubling trend corresponds with a staggering 547 percent increase in HIV cases over the past five years.

Dr. Devi noted that several factors may contribute to the high percentage of iTaukei individuals testing positive. She raised concerns regarding the interpretations of these statistics, suggesting there may be uncertainties about the reasons behind these figures. She pointed out that there might be a higher volume of testing within the iTaukei community compared to Fijians of Indian descent, who are tested less frequently.

The Ministry’s analysis is taking into account Fiji’s overall demographic distribution, emphasizing the need for careful interpretation of these statistics in relation to the total population.

Dr. Devi attributed the increased detection of cases to greater awareness and willingness to get tested, particularly among those who have engaged in risky behaviors or have had partners who were HIV-positive. She stressed the significance of encouraging everyone to remain vigilant about their health, stating, “HIV is no respecter of race, religion, age, etc.”

She also highlighted that myths surrounding HIV – such as the belief that it primarily affects certain groups – contribute to stigma and can deter individuals from seeking testing and treatment. The Ministry of Health is dedicated to addressing these disparities through enhanced education and outreach initiatives.
