HIV: A Hidden Challenge Across Fiji

Fiji’s fight against HIV is pressing, as highlighted by Dr. Rachel Devi, head of family health at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. During her presentation at the ODPP Annual Conference in Sigatoka, she emphasized that no area in Fiji is free from HIV.

According to Dr. Devi, every region, including towns and villages, is affected, though some areas experience higher rates of infection. For instance, the Suva-Nausori corridor presents significant challenges, but even remote maritime regions are not immune. Recent outreach efforts in these islands have revealed concerning results, with reports of several individuals testing positive during single visits.

The statistics are indeed alarming, with 552 new HIV cases recorded in the first half of 2024 alone—540 among adults and 12 in children. The Central Division accounts for a significant portion of these new cases, showing a dramatic 69 percent increase compared to the previous year. Other divisions, such as the Western and Northern Divisions, are also reporting new infections.

While there currently is no cure for HIV, Dr. Devi pointed out that, with proper access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, HIV can be managed as a chronic health condition. This offers a glimmer of hope for improving public health outcomes regarding HIV in Fiji.

It is a crucial time for the public health system in Fiji to intensify its efforts in awareness and education, ensuring access to testing and treatment in both urban and rural settings. As communities rally together and work towards effective strategies, there is hope for controlling the spread of HIV and improving the lives of those affected.

This focus on management and treatment illustrates an optimistic approach in addressing what is a complex and pervasive health issue in Fiji. With continued efforts and support, progress can be made in combating this epidemic.
