The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) is set to hold its inaugural regional technical cooperation session in Fiji from April 7 to April 11, 2024. This session marks a historic first, representing the Committee’s commitment to engage directly with Pacific Island nations, specifically Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. It is the first regional meeting of its kind outside of Geneva or New York, highlighting a progressive shift in the global focus on women’s rights in the Pacific region.

Facilitated in partnership with key organizations such as the Pacific Community and UN Women, the session will gather government ministers, human rights experts, civil society organizations, and national human rights institutions. The discussions will center on the progress made and challenges faced in implementing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Convention) within the region.

Nahla Haidar, Chair of the Committee, expressed that this moment is an opportunity to deepen collaborations and conversations aimed at advancing women’s rights and accelerating gender equality. She emphasized the Committee’s commitment to supporting Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu in their efforts to protect women and girls while eliminating gender discrimination.

In addition to these exchanges, the session will feature side events that will address critical topics such as gender-based violence, political participation, sexual and reproductive health rights, and the effects of climate change on women. This comprehensive approach reflects the diverse range of issues impacting women’s rights in the Pacific.

Fiji’s hosting of this session not only showcases its dedication to CEDAW principles but also serves as a beacon of hope for greater regional collaboration in promoting gender equality. The event signifies a commitment to creating stronger networks among countries and civil society, setting a positive trajectory for women’s rights and inspiring collective action across the Pacific.

Overall, this technical cooperation session not only represents a significant milestone for Fiji but also catalyzes progress in the broader movement for gender equality and human rights across the region, encouraging other nations to follow suit in prioritizing women’s rights.
