The Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has confirmed that there are currently no discussions regarding rewards for the Fiji men’s netball team following their remarkable victory at the Men’s Nations Cup in Singapore earlier this month. The team achieved a thrilling win against the Australian Under-20 team with a score of 55-54, securing the prestigious Merlion Cup at the Jurong East Sports Complex.
While Saukuru expressed gratitude to the men’s team for their historic achievement, he noted that rewards and cash incentives are typically reserved for teams competing at the World Cup and Olympic Games. “At the moment, there is nothing in place but we will have a look at it,” Saukuru stated. He emphasized the importance of the team’s accomplishment, stating, “We should thank them as a nation – our sports people have really showed the world that we are the best.”
Throughout the tournament, the Fiji men’s netball team displayed exceptional skill, overcoming strong opponents including England, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with their only loss coming against Australia in the round robin stage. This victory marks a significant achievement for the team and a proud moment for Fijian sports.
It is hopeful that the government’s recognition and potential reward discussion will evolve in the future, as the team has undoubtedly placed Fijian netball on an international stage. The team’s success serves as an inspiration for young athletes in the nation and highlights the growing prominence of men’s netball in Fiji.
