There has been no discussion regarding rewards for the men’s netball team following their remarkable victory at the Men’s Nations Cup in Singapore earlier this month. This was confirmed by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru.
The men’s team achieved a thrilling win against the Australian Under-20 team, clinching the Merlion Cup with a score of 55-54 at the Jurong East Sports Complex. Minister Saukuru expressed gratitude for their achievement, noting, “We wish to thank them for winning their first international tournament. I think we should thank them as a nation – our sports people have really shown the world that we are the best.”
Saukuru also mentioned that currently, cash incentives and rewards are typically reserved for teams participating at the World Cup and Olympic Games. “We’ll have to meet internally and we’ll see how it goes. So far, we have only been giving it to those at the world level, the World Cup, and Olympics,” he explained.
During the tournament, the Fiji men’s netball team only faced defeat against Australia U20 in the round-robin stage but impressively overcame teams from England, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong throughout the week-long event.
This victory marks a significant milestone for the team and highlights Fiji’s growing stature in the sport. It’s a moment of pride, reflecting not only their talent but also the potential for greater recognition and support for netball in Fiji. As discussions about rewards develop, one can hope that the team’s success will pave the way for future encouragement and investments in sports at all levels.
