There has yet to be any discussion on the rewards for the men’s netball team following their landmark victory at the Men’s Nations Cup in Singapore earlier this month. This information was shared by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru during a statement.
The men’s team achieved a thrilling victory against the Australian Under-20 team, winning the final by a narrow margin of 55-54 to secure the Merlion Cup at the Jurong East Sports Complex. Minister Saukuru expressed gratitude toward the team for their remarkable accomplishment, indicating that their victory marks the first international tournament win for the Fiji men’s netball team. “We wish to thank them for winning their first international tournament. I think we should thank them as a nation – our sports people have really shown the world that we are the best,” Saukuru said.
However, he noted that currently, there are no established incentives or rewards for this particular event, as cash prizes are typically reserved for teams that compete in the World Cup and Olympic Games. “We’ll have to meet internally and we’ll see how it goes. So far we only have been giving it to those at the world level, world cup and Olympics,” Saukuru added.
Throughout the week-long tournament, the Fijian men’s netball team showcased their skills, only falling to Australia U20 in the round-robin stage, while defeating strong teams such as England, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
This victory not only highlights the talent in Fijian sports but also marks a significant moment for men’s netball in the country. There is optimism that as discussions progress, appropriate recognition and rewards will be arranged for this historic achievement, reinforcing the importance of supporting athletes at all levels of competition.
