Historic Victory, No Reward? Fiji’s Men’s Netball Team Awaits Recognition

There has been no official conversation regarding rewards for the men’s netball team following their remarkable victory at the Men’s Nations Cup in Singapore earlier this month. This update was shared by Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, who confirmed that while the team achieved a significant milestone by defeating the Australian Under-20 team with a narrow score of 55-54 to secure the Merlion Cup at the Jurong East Sports Complex, discussions on recognition or rewards are still pending.

Minister Saukuru expressed gratitude towards the men’s team, emphasizing that this victory represents their first international tournament win. He stated, “We wish to thank them for winning their first international tournament. I think we should thank them as a nation – our sports people have really showed the world that we are the best.”

Currently, rewards and cash incentives are typically granted only to teams that participate in World Cup events or Olympic Games. Saukuru added that the government will meet internally to discuss potential recognition for the men’s netball team, highlighting the need for a review of how to celebrate achievements beyond the highest tiers of international competition.

Throughout the tournament, the Fiji men’s netball team showcased strong performance, only suffering a loss to Australia U20 in the round-robin phase but triumphing over England, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

This victory not only puts the men’s netball team on the map but also brings attention to the potential for growth and investment in non-traditional sports within the nation. The possibility of future recognition for their accomplishments serves as an encouragement for athletes to pursue excellence.

In summary, the men’s netball team’s success at the Men’s Nations Cup is a proud moment for the country, and there is hope that their achievement will lead to broader support and recognition for all athletes in the future.
