The Minister for Youth and Sports of Fiji, Honourable Jese Saukuru, recently hosted a significant meeting with His Excellency Omar Shehadeh, the Special Envoy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister for Foreign Affairs, in Suva. This meeting marks a notable event as it is the first official visit by a UAE Special Envoy to Fiji’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasizing the UAE’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Fiji.

The discussions during the meeting centered on potential collaborations aimed at bolstering Fiji’s youth and sports programs. Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to working closely together, signifying a promising start to what could become a fruitful partnership.

Minister Saukuru expressed his appreciation for the engagement of the UAE, noting the country’s contributions in areas such as renewable energy, climate resilience, and humanitarian aid across the Pacific. The meeting was attended by key figures including senior ministry officials, the CEO of the Fiji Sports Council, Gilbert Vakalalabure, and the Chairman of the Fiji National Sports Commission, Peter Mazey.

This meeting aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Fiji and the UAE, as seen in previous initiatives such as the establishment of the UAE-Fiji Joint Business Council (UFJBC). This council aims to enhance trade and investment opportunities between both nations, highlighting a broader strategy to fortify economic and cultural relationships.

The dialogue between Fiji and UAE is a step towards not only improving youth and sports development within Fiji but also enhancing economic relations that benefit both nations. The visit by the UAE envoy points to a shared vision for developing mutual interests and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing common challenges and aspirations. This initiative holds promise for future growth and collaboration, offering a hopeful outlook for both countries.
