Seven Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Group of Nine (G9) are set to take their oaths today, assuming roles as Ministers and Assistant Ministers in the Coalition Government of Fiji. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the State House at 11 a.m. and will be presided over by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that three selected G9 MPs will take on full ministerial positions. These include Ioane Naivalurua as Minister for Policing, Viliame Naupoto as Minister for Immigration, and Mosese Bulitavu as Minister for Climate Change. Additionally, four other G9 MPs will serve as assistant ministers: Naisa Tuinaceva for Transport, Josaia Niudamu for Justice, Penioni Ravunawa for Health, and Aliki Bia for Information. Notably, two G9 MPs, Alipate Tuicolo and Taito Rokomatu, will not hold ministerial positions.

The integration of G9 MPs into government roles represents a significant shift in Fiji’s political landscape. Formed in July 2024 after the deregistration of the FijiFirst party, the G9 has transitioned from opposition to government, a scenario not directly addressed by the 2013 Constitution. This situation presents a new dynamic, as the Constitution mandates that MPs not aligned with the ruling party must elect a Leader of the Opposition, but it lacks guidelines regarding the inclusion of crossbench MPs.

Prime Minister Rabuka has expressed his readiness to collaborate with the G9, while Attorney-General Graham Leung described this development as “uncharted territory,” suggesting that the absence of prohibitive clauses in the Constitution could lead to innovative governance opportunities. Political analysts believe this inclusion may bolster Rabuka’s coalition, offering a chance for enhanced collaboration in critical areas such as health, justice, and environmental policies.

The swearing-in marks not only a reshuffle of ministerial roles but also symbolizes a hopeful shift towards a more collaborative governance model in Fiji. By incorporating diverse perspectives from different political backgrounds, the government may become better equipped to address public needs and challenges, ultimately fostering a more inclusive political environment.

In summary, the elevation of G9 MPs is a pivotal moment for Fiji’s political landscape, setting the stage for innovative approaches to governance and the potential for improved public policy initiatives.
