History will be made on January 24, 2025, as Rugby Football Club Los Angeles (RFCLA) embarks on its inaugural match against the Fijian Drua, marking the first contest between a Major League Rugby (MLR) team and a Super Rugby Pacific squad. The event will be held at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Fiji, although the exact kickoff time has yet to be finalized.

In an effort to enhance accessibility for rugby enthusiasts, the Fijian Drua has set ticket prices at an appealing $5 for grass embankment seating and $10 for stands. This historic match not only highlights the progression of rugby in both the U.S. and Fiji but also signifies the increasing global presence of both leagues.

RFCLA is making significant strides on the international front, boosted by the signing of prominent players such as Christian Leali’ifano, and the leadership of Waratahs and Super Rugby Pacific champions Stephen Hoiles and David Dennis. The RFCLA roster also includes Semi Kunatani, a beloved Fijian athlete and Olympic gold medalist.

The Fijian Drua has quickly captured the affection of rugby fans worldwide with their dynamic playing style since entering the Super Rugby Pacific league. Notably, they have made it to the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs in both of their last two seasons and feature a roster filled with talented “Flying Fijians,” led by co-captains Tevita Ikanivere and Frank Lomani.

Baden Stephenson, General Manager of Rugby for the Fijian Drua, expressed enthusiasm about hosting RFCLA, stating, “This game will provide our players, coaches, and fans with a new and exciting challenge.” He noted that this historic fixture will strengthen the Drua’s global reach and foster new partnerships, particularly in burgeoning markets like Los Angeles.

Pete Sickle, CEO of RFCLA, expressed gratitude towards the Fijian Drua for their role in facilitating this unique opportunity. He remarked, “For our players and our fans, this momentous preseason fixture reflects the substantial growth our franchise has achieved in its first twelve months.”

Jack Mesley, CEO of Super Rugby Pacific, echoed the sentiment, stating the importance of this first-time meeting. With RFCLA hosting the upcoming Olympics and the 2031 Rugby World Cup set to take place in the U.S., this event occurs at a significant moment for rugby’s advancement in America.

MLR CEO Nic Benson noted that this matchup not only serves as preparation for RFCLA ahead of their season but also represents a historic step in MLR’s evolution. He emphasized the excitement of expanding MLR’s outreach internationally.

Tickets can be purchased online at drua.flicket.io and through various outlets, including Jack’s of Fiji and Damodar Cinemas. Following the match, fans will have an exciting opportunity to meet their favorite players on the field, fostering a more personal connection between athletes and supporters.
