A significant milestone has been reached for Robert Pearson Miller, as the government has officially handed over a piece of State land to him, concluding a matter that has lingered for over 52 years. This resolution stems from an agreement made in February 1971, when Miller’s late parents ceded a portion of their land for the construction of the Suva-Nadi (Queens) Highway. In return, they were promised an equivalent size of State land adjacent to their remaining property located in Nuku, Serua.
At a recent handover ceremony, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, presented State Grant No. 1592 to Miller, signifying the finalization of this long-standing commitment. Miller expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Minister and the Ministry staff, stating, “This is a very special and historic moment for our family.”
Minister Vosarogo lauded this event as not just a legal formality but a recognition of “justice delayed, but finally delivered.” He emphasized the government’s dedication to resolving historical land issues and ensuring equity in land management, affirming, “We are proud to restore what is rightfully yours.”
This development also mirrors broader governmental efforts to enhance infrastructure across Fiji, particularly with major projects like the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This ambitious initiative, supported by a FJD $300 million investment from China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to improve transportation networks, predominantly benefiting rural communities and fostering local economic growth.
Overall, the recent land handover represents a hopeful reconciliation of past grievances while showcasing the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and effective land management, promising an uplifting future for local communities in Fiji through enhanced connectivity and economic opportunities.
