The inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is set to begin this weekend in the Solomon Islands. Hosting the tournament is particularly fitting, as the country has a strong tradition in men’s Futsal, having won the OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup six times and participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
In the tournament’s opening match on Saturday evening, Fiji, led by former Solomon Islands futsal player Jerry Sam, will compete against Tahiti. Sam, who now oversees Fiji’s Futsal and beach soccer programs, highlighted the significance of this event for advancing women’s Futsal in the region.
“It’s very important that OFC has developed this pathway for women’s Futsal. This first-ever Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is a step forward and something that should continue to inspire more women to join the futsal family,” Sam stated.
Fiji will face Tahiti tomorrow at 6 pm.
