The inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup will begin this weekend in the Solomon Islands. The host country is well-known for its strong tradition in men’s Futsal, having won the OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup six times and participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
In the opening match on Saturday evening, the Fijian team, led by former Solomon Islands futsal player Jerry Sam, will compete against Tahiti. Sam, who currently oversees Fiji’s Futsal and beach soccer efforts, highlighted the significance of this tournament in promoting the women’s game in the region.
“It’s very important that OFC has developed this pathway for women’s Futsal. This first-ever Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is a step forward and something that should continue to inspire more women to join the futsal family,” said Sam.
Fiji’s match against Tahiti is scheduled for 6 pm tomorrow.
