The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is set to hold its first official gathering at its newly refurbished complex on May 21-22. This historic meeting marks a significant step for the council, which plays a vital role in preserving iTaukei cultural heritage and governance. Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula confirmed the meeting dates while addressing key issues surrounding chiefly representation, leadership succession, and the financial sustainability of the council’s activities.
With only one seat currently vacant due to the passing of the late Turaga na Qaranivalu, the replacement will be appointed according to traditional protocols by the bose vanua o Naitasiri. Ratu Viliame ensured that no temporary representatives would be appointed for absent high-ranking members, reflecting the council’s deep respect for chiefly status.
Funding for the GCC’s activities primarily comes from the iTaukei Trust Fund, which Ratu Viliame emphasized remains the main financial source for meetings. He stated that these gatherings are carefully budgeted and require approval from the Trust Fund Board. To ensure the long-term viability of the council’s operations, the chairman mentioned that the Trust Fund is replenished through managed investments.
This upcoming assembly not only symbolizes growth but also reflects the GCC’s commitment to engaging in critical discussions about the challenges facing their communities. The anticipation surrounding the newly refurbished complex highlights progress and adaptation, laying the groundwork for more efficient and impactful meetings in the future.
Overall, the GCC’s ongoing efforts to maintain its operations amid financial considerations showcase their dedication to serving the iTaukei people and promoting their cultural values.
