The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas are on the brink of a historic moment, as they prepare to face Brazil at Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, Colombia. This match marks the debut of the Fiji women’s team in a FIFA Women’s World Cup at any level, according to Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf.
Yusuf highlighted the comprehensive training the team has undergone, which included local practices as well as international friendlies against Costa Rica and Morocco. He noted that competing against higher-ranked teams has provided the Young Kulas with invaluable experience.
“This preparation has equipped the Young Kulas with valuable experience leading up to their World Cup debut against Brazil,” Yusuf stated. He applauded the team’s holistic readiness—physically, mentally, and spiritually—expressing confidence in their ability to perform well and bring pride to their nation.
“It’s great to see the team fully prepared. We will take one game at a time, and I know the girls will get the job done and make our country proud,” he added.
Although the Young Kulas find themselves in a tough Group B, which includes France and Canada, they are poised to embrace the challenge against Brazil. Yusuf credited head coach Angeline Chua for her commitment to the team and her selection of the most capable squad for the tournament.
The inclusion of three overseas players, including talented 15-year-old Aliana Vakaloloma, brings additional experience to the roster. Yusuf urged fans to rally around the Young Kulas as they aim to make history in their first World Cup appearance.
The match against Brazil is scheduled for 11 am today.
