The inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is set to begin this weekend in the Solomon Islands. The choice of the Solomon Islands as the host is notable, reflecting the country’s strong history in men’s futsal. The nation has secured the OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup title an impressive six times and has participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
Fiji, under the leadership of former Solomon Islands futsal player Jerry Sam, will take on Tahiti in the tournament’s opening match on Saturday evening. Sam, who is currently directing Fiji’s futsal and beach soccer programs, highlighted the significance of this tournament for the advancement of women’s futsal in the region. He stated, “It’s very important that OFC has developed this pathway for women’s Futsal. This first-ever Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is a step forward and something that should continue to inspire more women to join the futsal family.”
Fiji’s match against Tahiti is scheduled for 6 pm tomorrow.
