The organizers of the 2025 Hindu Unity Gathering are voicing their discontent over the cancellation of an upcoming program in Suva, attributing the decision to “political assumptions.” Sandeep Singh, an organizer, criticized the revocation of their permit, calling it politically motivated and discriminatory. He stated that the rationale provided for the cancellation contradicts the principles of freedom of assembly upheld in Fiji’s Constitution.
Singh emphasized that the organizing committee has garnered the support of 20 Hindu organizations, highlighting that their event reflects a communal desire for unity. He pointed out that the justification for canceling the gathering, which suggested divisions and a lack of support from select groups, does not resonate with the actual sentiments of the broader Hindu community.
The organizers stress that all communities in Fiji, including Hindus, should have equal rights to assemble and express their shared beliefs without facing discrimination. Previous events and incidents involving Hindu temples in Fiji, such as the recent tragic vandalism of the Samabula Shiv Mandir, have shed light on the challenges facing religious communities and the urgent need for respectful dialogue. While these incidents have sparked concern, they also present an opportunity for interfaith discussions to strengthen community bonds across diverse groups.
Despite the setback regarding the permit, community leaders remain hopeful that these challenges can lead to a broader conversation about equality and respect among all faiths in Fiji. The resilient response from religious communities illustrates a commitment to maintaining harmony and promoting understanding in the face of adversity, suggesting a future where diversity is embraced rather than feared.
