Timoci Tavatavanawai, a prominent figure from Queen Victoria School who won the Deans title in 2016, has been appointed one of the co-captains for the Highlanders as they head into the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season. Tavatavanawai will share captaincy duties with Hugh Renton, as the team aims to improve upon their previous season’s performance.

Since joining the Highlanders in 2024, the Fijian-born winger has solidified his place in the squad, becoming an essential component of their backline. His previous experience with Moana Pasifika, where he demonstrated significant prowess over two seasons, has contributed to his development as a formidable player. Tavatavanawai is celebrated for his explosive power, tackle-breaking ability, and turnover creation, alongside his contributions to the Tasman Mako.

His selection as co-captain underscores both his influence on the field and the admiration he garners from teammates. Tavatavanawai expressed his gratitude and eagerness to lead the team, stating, “It’s a real privilege for me to be asked to lead this team with Hugh. I am looking forward to contributing to the team’s growth and success in any way I can.”

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph highlighted the attributes that make Tavatavanawai and Renton excellent leaders: “Jim (Timoci) and Hugh embody the qualities we are looking for in our leaders — passion, commitment, and the ability to inspire others with their actions or words.” Joseph is optimistic about their leadership, believing it will guide the team through an exciting season ahead.

Both co-captains have shared their excitement for this leadership role, indicating a promising new chapter for the Highlanders as they prepare to commence their 2025 campaign against the Waratahs on February 14 at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

This dual-captaincy could bring a fresh perspective and collaborative spirit to the Highlanders, fostering unity and focus as they strive for success in the competitive Super Rugby Pacific landscape. With Tavatavanawai and Renton at the helm, the team’s prospects look bright for the upcoming season.
