The Highlanders have officially named Timoci Tavatavanawai and Hugh Renton as co-captains for the upcoming 2025 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season. Tavatavanawai, a dynamic winger from Fiji, joined the Highlanders in 2024 after two impactful seasons with Moana Pasifika. Known for his explosive power and ability to break tackles, Tavatavanawai has established himself as a key player in the Highlanders’ backline as well as the Tasman Mako in recent competitions.
His selection as co-captain marks a significant acknowledgment of his influence and the respect he commands among his teammates. Alongside Tavatavanawai, Hugh Renton brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned loose forward, having been with the Highlanders since 2021. Renowned for his work ethic, tactical insight, and tough defensive skills, Renton complements Tavatavanawai’s playing style.
Highlanders’ Head Coach, Jamie Joseph, expressed his confidence in the leadership capabilities of both players. “Jim (Timoci) and Hugh embody the qualities we are looking for in our leaders – passion, commitment, and the ability to inspire others with their actions or words. They both bring unique strengths to the table, and I believe they will complement each other well as co-captains. I’m excited to see them lead the team through what promises to be an exciting season,” said Joseph.
He emphasized the collaborative nature of the leadership within the team, stating that the leadership group will assist Tavatavanawai and Renton in maintaining the standards of performance and integrity, both on and off the field.
Both co-captains shared their enthusiasm regarding their new roles. Tavatavanawai conveyed his gratitude, saying, “It’s a real privilege for me to be asked to lead this team with Hugh. I am looking forward to contributing to the team’s growth and success in any way I can.” Renton echoed these sentiments, expressing his humility and eagerness to undertake the responsibility of co-captaining a team that holds special significance for him.
This leadership announcement comes as the Highlanders prepare for the new season with promising aspirations, and both Tavatavanawai and Renton are ideal representatives to propel the team forward amidst the excitement and expectations of Super Rugby Pacific. As they work together, the dual-captaincy could herald a new era of collaboration and achievement for the Highlanders.
With their fresh leadership, the Highlanders appear poised for a successful season, underscoring a spirit of unity and shared ambition.
