Athletes from Wainimala Secondary School, hailing from the rugged highlands of Naitasiri, have demonstrated remarkable resilience at the ongoing Coca-Cola Games Championship. Competing against the nation’s best, they were encouraged to channel their daily life struggles into motivation. Despite facing challenges such as limited training facilities and equipment, the team has secured an impressive three medals, including two silver and one bronze, in just two days of competition.
Team representative Manasa Nadore shared that many athletes come from humble backgrounds, with their families depending on farming for their livelihoods. This demanding life has compelled the young athletes to balance their training with essential day-to-day chores that support their families. The commitment of their parents in facilitating their travel to Suva for the competition adds to the support system that encourages these athletes to give their best.
Improvisation has become key for the Wainimala team, as they adapt their training around farming duties. Their success at the Games not only highlights individual grit but also reflects the collective strength and spirit of their community. Nadore emphasized that despite the balancing act of training and chores, the athletes have risen to the occasion. “These children come from really tough backgrounds, and sometimes balancing their training with their daily chores can be difficult,” she noted.
As the competition advances into the 200m heats and 800m finals, the team’s journey resonates with many others in Fiji’s athletic community, where stories of perseverance are common. Schools like Bhawani Dayal Arya College and Waidina College also face similar challenges but support for their athletes remains strong.
The Coca-Cola Games celebrate not only athletic excellence but the unity that drives the participants, as families, schools, and communities come together to nurture young talents. This spirit of camaraderie and collective effort gives hope for a bright future in athletics across Fiji, as young athletes continue to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
The ongoing coverage of the event highlights the importance of community spirit, and the nurturing environment provided by school and family support creates opportunities for these young athletes to thrive.
