The tribunal hearing regarding alleged misconduct by Christopher Pryde, the suspended Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), is ongoing at the Court of Appeal in Veiuto, Suva. Today’s hearings are set to feature testimonies from notable figures, including Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh, Permanent Secretary for Finance Shiri Goundar, Acting Chief Justice Justice Salesi Temo, and the Secretary for the Judicial Services Commission.

The tribunal is investigating claims of misbehavior and is expected to advise His Excellency the President on the potential removal of Pryde from his post. Key allegations being reviewed include:

– A meeting on February 28, 2023, where Pryde was observed conversing with Sayed-Khaiyum for over 45 minutes, during which the Criminal Investigation Department was investigating Sayed-Khaiyum, with the case file already with the Office of the DPP.
– An instance where, on December 4, 2023, Pryde received US$1,000 monthly in superannuation payments without the proper approvals from relevant authorities, including the Judicial Services Commission and the Offices of the Attorney-General and President.

The current proceedings are being overseen by Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Samuela Qica, and Chaitanya Lakshman, with the hearing scheduled for noon.

This ongoing tribunal reflects the system’s commitment to accountability and legal integrity. The testimonies from high-ranking officials could illuminate the nuances of these allegations and reinforce the importance of transparency in public service. As the process continues, it serves as a reminder that oversight functions are crucial for maintaining trust in judicial leadership and governance.
