The trial surrounding the seizure of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine continued as key witnesses took the stand in the Lautoka High Court. State-called witnesses included David Andrew Wright, the owner of Vuda Marina Coastal Barging Services, and boat captain Ratu Isoa Dina, who offered critical testimony regarding the operations of the barge involved in the case.

The defendants, including Justin Ho, David Heritage, Louie Logaivau, Ratu Aporosa Davelevu, Sakiusa Tuva, Jale Aukerea, Ratu Osea Levula, and Keanie McPherson, face multiple charges related to the importation and possession of methamphetamine, as well as the possession of property suspected to be the proceeds of a crime.

During the proceedings, Mr. Wright recounted how he moved to Fiji in December 2017 to establish a barge business and described interactions with David Heritage, who requested to charter the barge for transporting goods. Wright detailed several trips made in December 2023, noting unusual requests that raised his suspicions.

Captain Ratu Isoa Dina, who has worked for Wright for several years, shared his apprehensive experience during the trips. On one occasion, he expressed feeling scared as he suspected the cargo transported to a yacht was illegal drugs. Dina narrated how he was involved in the operation that included a Russian national, further complicating the unfolding scenario.

The proceedings reflect not only the serious nature of the charges but also the broader implications for law enforcement’s ongoing struggles against drug trafficking in Fiji. Justice Aruna Aluthge oversees the trial, which is set to examine crucial evidence as the prosecution seeks to build its case.

The commitment of the Fijian judiciary to tackle drug-related offenses stands firm, and as the trial unfolds, it raises hope for community safety and the effective enforcement of the law. With the voices of witnesses shedding light on the case, there is optimism that justice will prevail, contributing to a safer environment for all.
