High-Stakes Trial for Former Minister Ravu Set for February

The trial for former Fisheries and Forestry Minister Kalaveti Ravu is scheduled to commence in February of next year. Ravu faces charges alongside former Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi.

Ravu appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou, where he sought a variation to his bail to allow for travel to China. Meanwhile, Toaisi was absent from the proceedings due to an error regarding the hearing date.

The charges against Ravu involve alleged corrupt practices linked to the FijiFirst Party, including allegations of false declarations related to the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and a man named Tito Bainimarama.

Additionally, there are complaints against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem for collusion and conflicts of interest, as well as concerning Arif Ali, who is said to have made a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.

Further complaints have been filed against Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Charan Jeath Singh. Another investigation revolves around Voreqe Bainimarama for allegedly submitting false declarations regarding his income, assets, and liabilities from 2014 to 2019 and in 2022. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is also being investigated for failing to declare his overseas travel allowance.

FICAC has stated that it will refrain from commenting on ongoing investigations referred by the Supervisor of Elections until they are concluded. The Commission emphasized its commitment to handling all complaints meticulously, irrespective of the individuals involved.
