High-Stakes Legal Showdown: Former Attorney-General Faces Serious Charges

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is expected to appear in court today at the Nadi Magistrates Court, facing multiple charges including abuse of office, breach of trust, and unlawful carriage of firearms on aircraft.

Sayed-Khaiyum has been charged with 11 counts of unlawfully carrying a firearm on an aircraft, as well as 11 counts each of receiving a corrupt benefit, breach of trust by a public servant, and abuse of office.

This afternoon, Nancy Tikoisuva, the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, announced additional charges against Sayed-Khaiyum, as well as former Executive General of Corporate Affairs at Fiji Airways, Shaenaz Voss, and Fiji Airways General Manager of Safety, Security, and Quality, Sharun Ali, along with Fiji Airlines operating as Fiji Link.

Shaenaz Voss faces three counts of providing a corrupt benefit, while Sharun Ali has been charged with 11 counts of giving a corrupt benefit. Furthermore, Voss, Ali, and Fiji Airlines are also charged with five counts related to the breach of mandatory reporting of security occurrences, along with three counts of breaching airline security regulations.

These charges fall under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, the Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994, and the Crimes Act 2009. The accused individuals are scheduled to be presented before the Nadi Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
