Nancy Tikoisuva, the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, announced that her office is nearing the completion of vetting two significant cases.
The first case involves a theft of $450,000 from the Police Credit Union, alongside allegations of misuse of authority by several senior officials within the Fiji Police Force. These accusations stemmed from remarks made by Assistant Police Commissioner for Crime, Mesake Waqa, during a special meeting of the Fiji Police Credit Union earlier this year. Tikoisuva confirmed that the case is currently under final scrutiny by one of the prosecution officers in her office. “We are undergoing the final checks and we have a vetting process,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of consistency and thorough review in their investigations. The report on this matter is expected to be finalized by November 29.
In a separate matter, Tikoisuva mentioned that a report regarding a tragic incident involving a 21-year-old woman who fell to her death from a Ferris wheel during the 2023 Fiji Showcase at the Vodafone Arena carpark in Suva will also be available before next Friday. Tikoisuva highlighted the necessity of a thorough investigation for both cases, reiterating that once investigations are completed, the reports will undergo additional vetting before reaching her for final approval.
In summary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is diligently working to ensure that high-profile cases receive the attention and careful consideration they warrant. This demonstrates a commitment to accountability and justice within the Fijian legal system.
This proactive approach from the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions reflects a positive step towards transparency and thoroughness in handling serious allegations, promoting trust in the judicial process among the citizens of Fiji. Such diligence in addressing past incidents ultimately contributes to a safer and more just society.
