Former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is set to testify in the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) that is investigating the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Other notable figures expected to appear include the Attorney-General Graham Leung, Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu, and Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva, among others.

The inquiry aims to evaluate the legality of the process surrounding Malimali’s appointment as FICAC Commissioner. This investigation is being led by Justice David Aston-Lewis of the Supreme Court, who will look into any potential improper or unlawful influences that may have marred the selection process that took place last September.

Key areas of focus for the Commission include whether the appointment was affected by vested interests or if it was influenced by current FICAC cases involving high-profile individuals such as Members of Parliament, Ministers, and senior public servants. Malimali is being represented by Suva lawyer Tanya Waqanika.

The final report from the inquiry is anticipated to be delivered to the President and the Prime Minister later this month, with hearings scheduled to continue this morning at 9:30 am.

This inquiry not only sheds light on the processes of governance and public office appointments but also highlights the importance of integrity in public institutions. As this proceedings unfold, it offers a hopeful opportunity for reform and accountability in the Fiji government, reinforcing the foundational principles of transparency and justice.
