The Tribunal investigating the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, has called several key witnesses, including Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh, and Assistant Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna. The investigation stems from allegations of misconduct by Pryde.
During his testimony, Tunabuna expressed concerns regarding a public meeting he observed between Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He viewed their public interaction as unprofessional, especially in light of ongoing media coverage concerning a potential investigation into Sayed-Khaiyum. Tunabuna claimed that the discussion between the two lasted over 30 minutes and emphasized that they were easily visible to others in the room.
He explained that he did not overhear their conversation but based his judgment solely on their facial expressions, which he interpreted as indicative of the seriousness of their discussion. Tunabuna confirmed that a photograph he took, which was submitted as evidence in the case, showcased the meeting’s context without revealing any specific conversation details.
Roopesh Singh, representing the Fiji Law Society, highlighted that all witnesses were providing evidence based on their perceptions rather than firsthand knowledge of the conversation. Singh urged the Court to consider the limitations of this evidence when preparing its report.
The Tribunal will reconvene tomorrow at 10 a.m. to continue its proceedings.
Overall, the focus on the decorum expected from public officials during investigations, along with the vigilance of witnesses like Tunabuna, illustrates a commitment to transparency and accountability. As the Tribunal progresses, there is hope that it will lead to a thorough examination of the allegations raised, reinforcing the rule of law and the integrity of public institutions.
