Two individuals involved in a major drug trafficking case have withdrawn their guilty pleas at the Lautoka High Court. David Heritage and Ratu Osea Levula had previously pled guilty to charges related to the importation of over 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine in December 2023, but they changed their stance during a court session this morning.

As a result, the only individuals who have maintained their guilty pleas are Cathy Tuirabe Bainisavu and Sakiusa Tuva. Justice Aruna Aluthge has formally convicted Bainisavu and Tuva. Meanwhile, five other defendants continue to assert their non-guilty pleas, including Justin Steven Masih Ho, Frank Louie P. Logaivau, Jale Aukerea, Viliame Colowaliku, and Aporosa Davelevu.

The court has allowed for the possibility that Heritage and Levula, now convicted, may opt to serve as state witnesses, which could influence their sentencing. The ongoing trial is a significant part of Fiji’s continuous efforts to combat drug trafficking and enhance community safety.

With the proceedings continuing, the legal process underscores the commitment of the judicial system to uphold accountability, reflect on community safety concerns, and potentially deter future drug-related offenses. As the case unfolds, there is a hopeful outlook that these judicial efforts will foster a safer environment for the community.
