Former National Fire Authority CEO John O’Connor and Carpenters Fiji Ltd.’s managing director Daniel Kingston Whippy had their bail extended after receiving crucial disclosures related to their legal case. These disclosures were presented in the Suva Magistrate Court and included a witness statement along with CCTV footage.

Daniel Whippy, represented by attorney Suruj Sharma from Patel Sharma Lawyers, is facing a charge of counseling the commission of an offense. Meanwhile, John O’Connor, defended by Roylesh Nand from Lajendra Lawyers, is charged with abuse of office for allegedly gaining personal benefits through misconduct.

Both men are implicated in altering the findings of investigations into a fire at the MH warehouse in Walu Bay in April 2018. Specifically, O’Connor is accused of instructing National Fire Authority officers to modify their investigation results “for purposes of gain.” In turn, Whippy allegedly advised O’Connor to undertake these actions.

In court, Whippy’s attorney confirmed that he had surrendered his passport upon returning from surgery abroad. The case is set to continue with a mention on April 15.

This ongoing case emphasizes the seriousness of allegations within public offices and serves as a reminder of accountability in leadership roles. Furthermore, it highlights the legal system’s diligence in addressing accusations of misconduct. As developments unfold, the court’s proceedings will be closely monitored, reflecting the public’s interest in justice and transparency.
