A couple appeared in Suva Magistrate Court this afternoon, facing allegations of corruption involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, formerly the Principal Accounts Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has been charged with abuse of office for personal gain by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is accused of aiding and abetting this abuse.
The case centers around events that allegedly took place between November 2019 and June 2022. During this time, Matai is accused of neglecting to declare his personal interest in a business, Ink Escape Supplies, while adding it as an official vendor for the RFMF. This action reportedly enabled payments totaling $467,616.40 to the business at the expense of the RFMF, raising serious concerns about the misuse of authority.
During the court proceedings, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza instructed the couple’s lawyer to secure sureties who are older and have authority over the accused, as they were remanded after failing to provide the necessary guarantees. Although FICAC did not oppose bail, they requested rigorous conditions. These include a non-cash bond of $5,000, monthly reporting to FICAC, and the surrender of travel documents. The hearing for bail has been adjourned until today.
This case underlines the ongoing efforts by the FICAC to combat corruption and uphold integrity within public service. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government positions, which are essential for maintaining public trust.
In summary, the charges against Edua Biuvuli Matai and his wife highlight significant issues of corruption within the civil service sector, but they also reinforce the judiciary’s role in addressing these matters and ensuring accountability. The outcome of this case may contribute to ongoing discussions about ethics in public service and the necessity for stringent measures against corruption.
