The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has confirmed that investigations are currently underway concerning the importation of a firearm along with approximately 600 rounds of ammunition into Fiji. The firearm and ammunition were reportedly transported on the MV Malau, which arrived from Tonga. Due to the sensitive nature of the case, the identity of the high chief allegedly involved has not been disclosed.

During a recent press conference, Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the significance of this incident and the ongoing efforts by local authorities to uphold national security. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka praised the teamwork by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), the Fiji Navy, and the Fiji Police Force for their successful interception of what has been described as a weapon-carrying yacht in the waters around Viti Levu. Rabuka remarked on social media that this operation underscores the dedication of the individuals involved in protecting the safety and security of Fiji’s borders.

This incident continues to reflect a concerning trend of arms-related activities in the region, with past reports indicating similar cases where illegal firearms were intercepted, often linked to individuals with notable social status. Authorities have expressed the need for heightened vigilance due to the potential for these activities to escalate and their association with broader illegal operations, including drug trafficking.

As investigations progress, the hope remains that such proactive measures will lead to a safer environment for all residents of Fiji. These operations not only emphasize the importance of strict adherence to firearms regulations but also encourage community involvement in reporting suspicious activities to help safeguard national security.
