Two individuals facing allegations of defrauding the Nasinu Town Council out of more than $370,000 have received additional disclosures in their case. This was confirmed by prosecution attorney Nimisha Shankar during a recent proceedings before Justice Usaia Ratuvili at the High Court in Suva.
The defendants include Pauliasi Bainivalu, a former IT officer for the council, and Shiu Raman, a past employee in the field of Innovation Technology. The charges against them are extensive and revolve around claims of fraudulent activity.
Specifically, Bainivalu is accused of soliciting $116,177 and accepting $57,427.40 in bribes from several companies within the time frame of 2014 to 2019. Raman faces charges that include conspiracy to defraud, obtaining an illicit gain, bribery, general dishonesty resulting in a financial loss, and destruction of evidence. It is claimed that he attempted to facilitate these offenses by offering Bainivalu a $2,066 bribe.
Interestingly, Bainivalu’s lawyer did not appear for the court session, whereas Joji Cakau represented Raman. The case has been rescheduled and is set to continue on January 30, 2025.
This situation serves as a reminder of the significance of accountability in public office. As the judicial process unfolds, it is hoped that justice will be served, thereby reinforcing trust in local governance and deterring future misconduct. Maintaining integrity within public institutions is essential for the overall well-being of the community.
