The Suva Magistrates Court has scheduled trial dates for former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, ex-Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and former Health Minister Dr. Neil Sharma over allegations of non-compliance with procurement regulations. The trial is set to take place from July 28 to August 1 and August 4 to 8, continuing from August 18 to 22. An earlier preliminary court conference will occur on April 2, 2025.
This case revolves around charges filed against the trio for reportedly not adhering to the statutory requirements outlined in the 2010 Procurement Regulations. Specifically, Bainimarama is accused of abusing his position by improperly waiving the tender process for a Ministry of Health contract on September 13, 2011, while serving as Minister of Finance. Both Sayed-Khaiyum and Sharma face similar accusations; Sayed-Khaiyum is also charged with obstructing justice, while Sharma is implicated in manipulating the tender process to favor a specific company.
Notably, Sayed-Khaiyum allegedly stalled an investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) into Sharma, which has led to significant public concern about governance and accountability. The ongoing legal proceedings serve as a critical moment for transparency in public service in Fiji, and many citizens are hopeful for a resolution that upholds ethical standards and justice within the country’s systems.
As the case unfolds, it may reinforce the importance of strict adherence to procurement regulations, contributing to a strengthened foundation for governance and public trust. Keeping a close eye on how the judicial process navigates these serious allegations will be essential for the public and stakeholders in Fiji.
