Former National Fire Authority (NFA) Board Chair John O’Connor has pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges brought against him by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This significant legal proceeding took place during a court appearance in Suva, where O’Connor faced allegations of abusing his office while overseeing the NFA.
O’Connor is charged with a count of Abuse of Office, linked to events between January 1 and September 28, 2018. It is alleged that he directed NFA officers to alter the findings of a fire investigation report regarding a fire that occurred at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay on April 8, 2018. These actions are claimed to have been prejudicial to the rights of the NFA and were purportedly intended to provide a personal benefit to O’Connor.
Alongside O’Connor, Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, also entered a “Not Guilty” plea. Whippy is charged with Counseling for the Omission of Offense, accused of advising O’Connor to amend the investigation report’s findings.
During the court proceedings, Whippy’s legal counsel stated that he requires medical treatment overseas, specifically knee surgery scheduled to occur between February 2 and March 1, 2025. The FICAC prosecutor did not object to this travel request, resulting in the lifting of a Stop Departure Order, thus allowing Whippy to seek necessary medical attention.
The case is set to resume on March 3, 2025, when further discussions regarding hearing dates will take place. This ongoing legal matter underscores the critical importance of accountability in public institutions and corporate governance in Fiji.
As the proceedings unfold, they serve not only as a mechanism to address serious allegations but also highlight the necessity of integrity in both public and private sectors. There is hope that these legal developments will contribute positively to restoring public trust in governance, ensuring that ethical conduct remains a cornerstone of leadership in Fiji.
