High-Profile Charges: Former Minister Faces Court Over Gun and Corruption Allegations

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is scheduled to appear in the Nadi Magistrates Court today, facing multiple charges including abuse of office, breach of trust, and unlawful carriage of firearms on aircraft.

Sayed-Khaiyum is facing 11 counts related to the unlawful carriage of firearms, along with 11 counts each for receiving a corrupt benefit, breach of trust by a public servant, and abuse of office.

This afternoon, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva approved the charges against Sayed-Khaiyum, Shaenaz Voss, former Executive General of Corporate Affairs at Fiji Airways, Sharun Ali, the General Manager of Safety, Security and Quality at Fiji Airways, and Fiji Airlines T/A Fiji Link.

Shaenaz Voss is facing three counts of giving a corrupt benefit, while Sharun Ali is charged with 11 counts of the same. Additionally, Voss, Ali, and Fiji Airlines T/A Fiji Link are charged with five counts regarding breaches of mandatory reporting of security incidents and three counts related to breaches of airline security.

The charges are brought under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994, and Crimes Act 2009. The accused are set to appear in the Nadi Magistrates’ Court later today.
