The High Court in Lautoka has urged the Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service to provide counseling for 19-year-old Josefa Hope Bolawaqatabu, who has been convicted of several offenses. Justice Sunil Sharma delivered the sentence, which includes three years, four months, and ten days in prison, accompanied by a non-parole period of two years and four months.
Bolawaqatabu was found guilty on three counts of aggravated robbery, three counts of theft, as well as one count each of breaching bail conditions and violating a suspended sentence. Court documents revealed that he committed the crimes at night, breaking into three businesses and stealing cash, totaling $2,360, along with various items.
While on a suspended sentence for a previous offense, Bolawaqatabu was sentenced to an additional two months of jail time due to another breach. The judge noted the audaciousness of the accused, emphasizing his disregard for court orders. Justice Sharma pointed out the growing concern among business owners regarding such crimes, indicating that many are hesitant to leave their properties unattended.
Despite the nature of his offenses, the judge acknowledged the importance of rehabilitation and expressed hope that young offenders like Bolawaqatabu would use their sentences as an opportunity for change. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to pay a fine of $90, with a one-month jail sentence in default.
Justice Sharma believed the non-parole period was fair and aligned with community expectations, emphasizing the need for the accused to learn from his mistakes and avoid further legal troubles in the future.
