The High Court has upheld a denial of bail for Sairusi Ceinaturaga, a 35-year-old man accused of murder and assault in the tragic death of his partner’s one-year-old son. The ruling was made by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull during a hearing held in Suva.

Ceinaturaga sought bail based on concerns regarding his health, specifically the risk of HIV exposure in the remand center, as well as his desire to see his daughters who are being cared for by their grandfather. Despite his pleas, the state prosecutor, Unal Lal, argued against the granting of bail, emphasizing the potential risk of interference with Ceinaturaga’s vulnerable partner and children.

The accusations against Ceinaturaga stem from a distressing incident that took place on October 17 of the previous year at the Vunidawa settlement in Cunningham. While he has admitted to slapping his partner, he has denied causing harm to her son, contesting allegations that he struck the child with a spoon, slammed his head against a wall, and threw him onto a mattress.

Justice Bull will provide her written reasons for the bail decision tomorrow, and the court has set the next hearing for June 20.

This case raises significant concerns regarding domestic violence and its impact on children. The need for vigilant community support for victims of abuse is underscored, highlighting the importance of protective measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals. There is hope that ongoing legal proceedings will ultimately lead to justice and stronger protections for families facing domestic challenges.
