The High Court is set to make a preliminary ruling regarding serious allegations involving former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem. The case focuses on potential constitutional breaches, particularly concerning Saneem’s rights.
Sayed-Khaiyum faces allegations of abuse of office, while Saneem is accused of accepting a corrupt benefit. It is reported that, during his short tenure as Acting Prime Minister from June 30 to July 12, 2022, Sayed-Khaiyum signed a Deed of Variation and Addendum without the necessary authorization from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President. This deed purportedly facilitated government payments covering Saneem’s taxes.
Additionally, between June 1 and July 31, 2022, Saneem allegedly solicited and received over $50,000 in tax relief on his back pay from a senior government official, raising questions about the legal grounds for these actions.
The next court hearing is scheduled for April 15, with a tentative trial date set for May 26 to 30. This ongoing legal battle points to significant ethical and legal issues within the government, emphasizing the vital importance of transparency and accountability in public service.
As the case unfolds, there is a sense of optimism that the judicial process will restore justice and uphold ethical standards amongst public officials. The community remains hopeful that the resolution of this case will help rebuild trust in governance and affirm that integrity is paramount for those in positions of public service.
