High Court Set to Revisit Controversial Case Against Former Fiji MP

The High Court is set to hear a motion to dismiss the case against former FijiFirst Member of Parliament, Vijendra Prakash, next Thursday. The case was brought before High Court Judge Pita Bulamainaivalu this morning.

Although the hearing was originally scheduled for today, the lead Counsel, Siddharth Nandan, was absent. Instead, Suva lawyer Jagath Karunaratne appeared on his behalf and requested to reschedule the hearing for Thursday.

The Attorney-General’s Office was represented by Yovin Naidu, while Seini Fotofei appeared on behalf of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The High Court accepted the request and instructed all parties to submit their documentation by September 4.

Last year, Prakash was convicted of unlawfully receiving $33,670 in parliamentary allowances after an eight-week trial. He faced charges from FICAC for providing false information to a public servant and for obtaining a financial advantage. The case will resume next Thursday at 2:30 pm.
