In a notable hearing at the Lautoka High Court, it was revealed that former Minister of Trade, Faiyaz Koya, had inaugurated the Sub-Zero Cafe, car wash, and barber shop run by Justin Ho, who is currently facing drug-related charges. This event on July 30, 2022, has become pivotal during the ongoing methamphetamine trial involving Ho and his associates.
During the trial, the third accused, Louie Logaivau, recounted Koya’s remarks during the opening ceremony. Koya expressed optimism that the establishment would serve both tourists and locals, highlighting the novelty of having such services in Denarau. Logaivau has been employed by Ho since the inception of the cafe but disclosed that it closed in December 2022 following conflicts among business partners. He has since transitioned to work at the car wash.
The state counsel brought forth serious allegations questioning whether the businesses were merely a cover for Ho’s alleged drug activities. Logaivau responded ambiguously, indicating that it was only after his personal experiences, including a concerning incident where he claimed to be kidnapped, that he began to harbor suspicions about the true nature of the businesses.
Logaivau noted that he was taken unlawfully to a location in Lautoka and later informed by Ho that they needed to flee due to police pursuits. He faced intense cross-examination, where he was reminded of the available mechanisms to report such threats, which he failed to utilize at the time.
The trial has garnered significant public interest given the gravity of the charges involving over 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine. It underscores the complexities involved in organized crime and the overarching need for community safety.
The Fijian judiciary’s handling of this case reflects a robust commitment to transparency and justice in addressing drug trafficking. Each testimony offered in court signals a collective resistance against illicit activities and strives to reinforce societal trust in the legal framework.
As the case unfolds, there is a shared hope within the community for clarity and justice, indicating a strong determination to dismantle drug trafficking networks and bolster public safety.
