Tevita Kapawale, an alleged mass murderer, has had his bail application rejected by the Suva High Court. In a hearing presided over by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, Kapawale faces multiple serious charges, including five counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of intimidation.

Kapawale is implicated in the deaths of three Indonesians and two Fijians who were aboard the FV Tiro 2 on May 18, 2021, following an altercation among the crew. This marks the second time Kapawale has sought bail, claiming he needs the opportunity to work and provide for his family financially.

However, Justice Tuiqereqere pointed out that Kapawale has missed court on two occasions. Despite having surrendered to authorities after a bench warrant was issued, the judge noted that this does not excuse his prior absences. The trial is set to take place in January.

The judge acknowledged Kapawale’s presumption of innocence but emphasized the gravity of the charges and the substantial evidence against him. He also stated that if found guilty of murder, Kapawale could face a life sentence.
