High Court Issues Ultimatum to Lautoka Couple Over Drug Charges

A Lautoka couple facing drug charges has received a stern warning from the High Court regarding their attendance in court. Rizwan Ali and his partner Grace Katia Liuvoliga appeared before Justice Riyaz Hazma after missing two previous court dates. The couple had provided sick leave certificates for their absences, citing suffering from gastritis on each occasion, which drew skepticism from the judge due to the coincidence of their illnesses.

Justice Hazma emphasized the seriousness of the situation, indicating that if Ali and Liuvoliga miss any further court dates, this would lead to a bench warrant for their arrest. The judge also mentioned that he may summon their doctor to question the validity of the medical excuses.

The couple is charged in connection with a significant drug bust involving over 12.33 kilograms of cocaine seized on February 15 of the previous year along the Vuda Bypass Road in Lautoka. The case has now been adjourned to April 23 for additional legal proceedings.

This case underscores the continual efforts of the judicial system to address drug-related crimes and ensure accountability among accused individuals. It also highlights the importance of reliability and responsibility in legal processes. The Lautoka High Court aims to send a clear message about the consequences of missing court hearings, reaffirming the commitment to uphold the rule of law in the community.
