The High Court in Suva has granted a Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) against Sairusi Ceinaturaga, a 35-year-old man charged with the alleged murder of his one-year-old daughter last month. Ceinaturaga made his initial court appearance before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, facing serious charges that include murder, assault, and actions intended to cause grievous harm.
According to allegations, Ceinaturaga physically assaulted his 27-year-old de-facto partner while she was preparing a meal. He is also accused of violently striking his daughter with an aluminum cooking spoon, causing her face to collide with a wall, and throwing her onto a mattress. In a separate instance, he allegedly assaulted his three-year-old son by hitting his head against the wall.
Police investigations revealed that Ceinaturaga has a history of abusive behavior. He has chosen to obtain Legal Aid for his defense. During the proceedings, Prosecutor Unal Lal emphasized the necessity of the DVRO to ensure the safety of the de-facto partner and their young son. Consequently, Justice Bull issued the order with a standard non-molestation condition.
Ceinaturaga remains in custody, with the case being postponed until December 12.
This tragic incident highlights the critical need for robust protective measures for victims of domestic violence, particularly in households with young children. As communities work towards providing support and resources to those affected, it is hoped that awareness and prevention efforts will help reduce the incidence of such violence in the future.
