High Court Grants Bail to Arson Suspect in Technical Institute Fire

The High Court has granted bail to Emosi Tikoicina, who is accused of setting fire to the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute in Nausori. The case was heard this afternoon by High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

Justice Rajasinghe imposed strict bail conditions on the accused, which include prohibitions against interfering with prosecution witnesses and committing any new offenses while on bail. Tikoicina has also been forbidden from entering the Technical Institute premises.

State Counsel Zenith Zunaid informed the court that the accused had confessed to his friend, a fellow student at the Institute. Tikoicina had previously pleaded not guilty in May.

He faces a charge of arson, as defined by section 362 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009. The allegations state that on April 7, 2024, in Nausori’s Eastern Division, Tikoicina intentionally and unlawfully set fire to the building and its contents.

The case has been postponed until September 30 for further mention.
