A man, Lambert Kuruvoli, has denied charges of importing and possessing 2.3 kilograms of methamphetamine during a court hearing at the High Court in Lautoka. The charges allege that Kuruvoli brought the drugs into the country in January, having been found in possession upon arriving on an international flight.

Represented by attorney Inoke Tamanikasaqa, Kuruvoli refuted the accusations of unlawful importation and possession of the illicit substance. Justice Aruna Aluthge, presiding over the case, advised that defense lawyer Litia Vateitei be present during the next court session for a pretrial conference, which has been scheduled for August 19. Tamanikasaqa noted that Kuruvoli made no admissions during his caution interview, and the judge extended bail for Kuruvoli as the legal proceedings unfold.

This case is part of a broader concern regarding drug-related offenses in Fiji, where recent reports have highlighted serious judicial actions against multiple individuals involved in drug trafficking, including police officers. The judiciary’s firm response indicates a commitment to public safety and accountability within law enforcement and society at large.

As these legal proceedings continue, there is hope that the rigorous enforcement of drug laws will contribute to enhancing community safety and reinforcing public trust in the justice system. Community efforts to combat drug trafficking, coupled with judicial determination, signal a collective stand against illicit drug activities in Fiji.
