Veronica Malani’s attorney, Sitiveni Raikanikoda, has been granted 14 days to submit an affidavit concerning a motion to dismiss lodged by Neelraj Sharma, the former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The civil case was brought before Justice Usaia Ratuvili at the High Court in Suva, focusing on a compensation claim of $800,244 involving 11 individuals associated with the inquiry into the alleged bombing incident from 1987.
The defendants include both current and former members of the Fiji Police Force as well as the DPP. During the hearing, Sharma’s attorney, Ronald Singh, informed the court about the motion to exclude his client from the proceedings, highlighting that Sharma had previously worked in the DPP’s office and is currently employed at Munroe Leys Lawyers.
Justice Ratuvili instructed Raikanikoda to address the motion and to provide any evidence related to his client’s involvement. Raikanikoda expressed concerns regarding the absence of legal representation for two of the defendants, who are retired civil servants.
The defendants in question included former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu and retired Assistant Police Commissioner Biu Matavou. Justice Ratuvili noted that the Office of the Attorney-General must clarify this issue in the upcoming session.
The case has been adjourned until October 9 for further discussion.
