The High Court in Suva has issued a directive for Edward Nand, who has been convicted for the murder of Narend Chand, to receive medical treatment at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Nand appeared in court with visible bruises, prompting his legal counsel, Sunil Gosai, to express concerns regarding his client’s safety, as he alleged that Nand had been assaulted by Correction officers the previous day.
Gosai noted that Nand entered the court with two bandages stained with dry blood and a swollen face, indicating that he required immediate medical attention. Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo granted the request for medical care before sending Nand back to the remand center post-treatment.
Edward Nand and his co-accused, Salimoni Lagicere, were convicted for the murder of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian national, during February 2023 in Korovou, Tailevu. Authorities have revealed that Chand was lured under false pretenses, intending to meet a woman he’d been conversing with online, who turned out to be a fabricated profile controlled by one of the accused.
The scheduled sentencing for Nand and Lagicere will take place on March 7, 2025. This case highlights ongoing issues of safety, notably the dangers posed by online interactions and relationships. As proceedings continue, there remains hope for justice and public awareness regarding the severe implications of online deception. It serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of vigilance when engaging with individuals on social media.
